Horse School

May 4, 2024 Canceled - In lieu of Horse School, two evening clincs are being offerred by our Horse School Instructors, June 4, 2024 and July 2, 2024.  Please see the June and July Clover Commucator Newlsetter for additional details.

Lorain County Fairgrounds

This fun, hands-on learning opportunity will be a one-day school offered for youth enrolled in 4-H equine projects.  Youth will gain knowledge and guidance from well-respected and state-approved workshop instructors. 

Youth and a registered project horse will participate in hands-on instruction.

Three tracks will be offered: Saddle Horse, Small Equine, and Draft Horse.  Youth will choose one track to participate in throughout the day.  Tracks will be divided into two groups to ensure the safety of youth and horses.  Workshops will be approximately 60 minutes long.  Youth will participate in two-morning workshops and two-afternoon workshops.

Horse Show Opportunities 

Performance Against Standards- PAS Shows

4-H’ers must qualify to compete at the Ohio State 4-H Horse Show.  Qualifying shows are called Performance Against Standards (PAS) Shows.  Classes offered at these shows are graded according to a set of standard guidelines.  These guidelines can be found on the state website.

Huron, Erie, and Lorain counties work together to offer our youth a local PAS try-out option.

Tri-county PAS Show CLuster Rules

The deadline to register for these shows is June 1, 2024.  Complete the PAS form below and return it to the OSU Extension office with a $40.00 payment by the deadline.

Horse Communications Contest

An opportunity for youth enrolled in a 4-H horse project to demonstrate their communication and media skills on a specific equine or equine-related topic.

Horse Bowl

An opportunity for 4-H members enrolled in horse projects to demonstrate their knowledge of equine-related matters through a quiz bowl-style competition.

Hippology

This opportunity is for youth enrolled in a 4-H horse project to demonstrate the breadth of their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry and the application of this knowledge and skill.

Horse Judging

In this opportunity, youth participants learn and apply knowledge of the ideal features of a variety of breeds and a variety of riding styles. They must evaluate, or place, each horse in relation to the ideal for the breed and in relation to the other horses or riders in the class.  Competitors provide a brief oral presentation explaining their placings.     

Horse Poster Contest

A diverse visual demonstration of equine project knowledge.
