OSUE Family and Consumer Sciences Educators have created a “how to” video series, Tips for Teens. Each video offers information about life skills from basic car maintenance, doing laundry, cleaning a bathroom, folding a fitted bed sheet to making healthy snacks and shakes. The new weekly series, Tips for Teens, is designed to help teens develop some awareness, knowledge, skills, and aspirations about life readiness.

Tips for Teens is a great way to learn how to do a task, and each video takes less than five minutes. The videos get teens focused on what matters: Gaining confidence!

  • “Employee Rights and Responsibilities” - Summer is here and many teens are getting a job.  In this video Alisha explains why it’s important to understand your rights and responsibilities as an employee.

  • “What to Wear – Dress Code Guidelines for Teen Girls” - Knowing what to wear for certain occasions or events can be challenging? If you would you like to learn more about dress code guidelines for teen girls and suggestions for acceptable attire check out this video. 

  • "How to Pump Gas" - This video demonstrates step-by-step how to put gas into a vehicle.
  • "Demonstrations and Public Speaking Techniques" - This video provides steps to take to properly prepare and give a demonstration.  The techniques shared will help guide you successfully through any public speaking event or demonstration.
  • "Added Sugar in Beverages"Do you know how much added sugar is in the beverages you drink?  What you drink is just as important as what you eat.   Miriam Knopp, OSU Extension Intern in Franklin County, explains why sugary drinks should be avoided and explains how to determine the amount of sugar in the beverages you consume.
  • "How to Make Apple Nachos" featuring Pat Brinkman, Family and Consumer Sciences Educator in Fayette County.  Pat demonstrates how to make a tasty and healthy snack.  Remember an apple a day, keeps the doctor away! 
  • "Scams and Phishing"Do you know how to protect yourself against scams and phishing? Alisha Barton, Family and Consumer Sciences Educator in Miami County, will share tips to protect yourself and guard against being a victim of scams and phishing.
  • "How to Address an Envelope" Sometimes the art of simple things are lost on a paperless society, but are we truly paperless?  The skill of properly addressing an envelope is still an important skill for everyone to have.  Watch this week’s video to learn how to properly address an envelope. 
  • “Teen Mental Health – You Matter” - Please share with the teens in your life and on social media.  Encourage your school districts, juvenile courts, health department, Job and Family Services, etc. to share it.  The video asks the questions:  Have you ever felt sad or withdrawn, experienced severe mood swings, or had difficulty concentrating? These can be warnings signs to alert you that there may be an issue with your mental health. 1 in 5 children ages 13-18 have, or will have a serious mental illness. You are not alone! There is HOPE and recovery is possible!
  • Five Tips to Play with and Interact with a Small Child -  Are you interested in learning how to play and interact with a young child?  Watch this week’s video for 5 helpful tips.
  • "Race and Racism - Huh?" - Learning about topics such as racism, oppression, and social identity requires stamina, courage, and skill. During this brief video a few terms and concepts will be introduced. Upon watching it you'll have a better sense of the way race has been constructed and the ways to use your unique gifts and talents to interrupt, speak out, and stand against racism.
  • “How to Navigate Difficult Conversations” - This video focuses on how our bodies have their own form of knowledge.  This knowledge is typically experienced as a sense of constriction or expansion, or ease, energy or numbness.  It signals to our brains whether we are safe or unsafe.  Especially in difficult conversations, we can use body awareness to effectively engage with others and navigate contentious issues.
  • "How to Use a Fire Extinguisher" - features 4-H teen members and Brent Endsley, Fire Prevention Officer at Coshocton Fire Department, demonstrates how to use an ABC fire extinguisher.
  • “How to Sew a Button” - After you watch the video you will be able to sew a button on a shirt, pants, jacket, etc.
  • “How to Use Mindfulness to Settle your Body (and Feel Good!)” - Mindfulness is not about fixing life's problems -- it’s about noticing what is. "Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: On purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”
  • “How to Measure Ingredients” - Measuring liquid ingredients is much different than measuring dry ingredients, this video will demonstrate the correct technique for both including the best way to measure flour and brown sugar. 
  • “Developing Cultural Intelligence” - As one ventures away from one's home, one may meet persons whose physical, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds differ from one's own backgrounds. Cultural intelligence, a strategy to better understand others' backgrounds, is one way to help one get to know, and perhaps develop friendships with those persons from diverse backgrounds.
  • “Making Guacamole” - The video demonstrates how to open an avocado and make a simple recipe of guacamole by using salsa
  • "Basic Budgeting"
  • "How to Write a Check" - The video describes the parts of a check and how to fill them out as well as some information on how to use checks.  
  • “Basic Banking”The video offers teens tips on basic banking including savings accounts, checking accounts, and debit/credit cards. 
  • "How to Make a Healthy Fruit Smoothie"
  • “Go Out There and Fail!” - Sometimes our irrational thoughts about awful outcomes or needs for perfection may keep us from trying new activities. As we can tell ourselves rational statements—of our possible failures as we get better at new activities—those might help free us up simply to do our best.
